With the Internet and social media, almost anyone can be your mentor. They don’t even need to know you exist. Just pick a person whose work you admire and follow them on the Internet. In the Mentor Focus series, I profile the people I follow online.
My wife once asked me, “if you could have lunch with anyone, who would it be?” My answer wasn’t what she expected. She thought I might choose Tim Ferriss or Ichiro Suzuki. But Tim Ferriss’ books, blog, and podcasts go so in-depth that I don’t think I’ll gain much from a meeting. I love watching Ichiro play baseball, but I don’t care to meet him. I chose James Altucher. He comes up with new ideas every day. He’s quirky and weird to the point that I wouldn’t know what to expect if I ever met him.
James Altucher is best known for his writing. He is a former hedge fund manager and founder of the stock picking site StockPickr. His best-selling book Choose Yourself sums up his philosophy. In today’s world, you can’t rely on employers or the government. You need to choose yourself and walk your own path in life, rather than let others choose it for you.
